Short Description- Grandma, What Is Cancer? is a book intended to help young children understand what cancer is. It is written in a story form where a little girl by the name of Susie asks...Grandma, What is Cancer? She had overheard a telephone conversation saying her Mommy had cancer and she wanted to know what cancer was. She was afraid because she heard this word before and she knew it meant something bad. Grandma, What is cancer was written because we had a very difficult time finding the types of books we needed to explain cancer when my sister was dying back in 1998.I was determined to make something that wasn't so gloomy and that would help to explain cancer without saying "Yes you are going to die"...I just don't think you need to scare a child anymore than they already are. I do believe in honesty but I also believe in a gentle approach. So my book deals in faith, and ones belief and trust in God/the doctors. It is written in a language a young child can understand and it has colorful illustrations that they can look at to help them when sometimes words just seem far too overwhelming. My own niece recently looked at this book and said "wow...if only we had something like this when Mom died!".(The other good thing about this book is 50% of the profits are going to charity in memory of my Mom and sister).
